In H.E.A.R.T. class your child will learn about many health related topics including: drugs safety (peer pressure, staying safe and knowing the facts), building positive friendships, human body (dissection with grades 2, 5 and 6), nutrition, physical fitness, safety (seatbelt, fire, internet, bicycle, sun, water, etc), bullying, showing appreciation, and maturation for 5th and 6th boys and girls. We discussed fire safety in your home, and saw a fire safety movie from Timon and Pumbaa. Click on the LIVE picture to watch the movie.

Getting out of the home first and calling 911 from outside.

Emergency Preparedness
We will discuss typical family emergencies and the supplies needed to help with these emergencies. The students will understand how to make their own emergency preparedness kit (flashlight, batteries, whistle, etc). We will discuss practicing our emergency plans. Fire escape plans, tornado/severe weather plan/loss of power/etc.
Water Safety
Look before you leap!
If still learning to swim stay close to an adult.
Always swim with a buddy and an adult watching.
Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours!
Wear a life jacket when on a boat, jet ski, etc.
Get out of water if there is lightning and thunder!
Bike Safety-Bicycle Safety Camp Movie
Don't ride on the back or handlebars of someone else's bike! One person on a bike!
Look left, right then left again!
Listen for cars and other vehicles!
Ride in a straight line, single file if one the sidewalk!
Leave space between riders!
Wear your helmet!
Obey STOP signs and traffic lights!
Gun Safety
Do not touch guns!
If a friend wants to show you a gun leave right away and tell an adult!

Wear sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours. Wear your hat, sun glasses, spend time in the shade on a sunny day, and wear clothes to help protect your skin from the sun.

The Human Body/Hygiene
The students will understand why it is so very important to take good care of their bodies. From keeping it clean to understanding how the human body works, students will learn that taking care of their body now will make for a healthier future.
Washing Hands the Right Way
Students will be able to understand and practice (at home) proper hand washing techniques. They will also understand that proper hand washing is the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs.

Students will find out (if they didn't already know) that you cannot see germs unless looking under a very high powered microscope! We have good germs and germs that can give us a cold. We need to always wash our hands before eating, after using the bathroom and when returning home from a public place (school, store, etc). We will also discuss keeping our fingers away from our eyes, nose and mouth.

Students will understand why everyone should exercise every day (how it strengthens our body, organs, muscles, etc.). Children should try to get 60 minutes of physical activity. What is physical activity? We will discuss stretching prior to physical activity, and drinking enough water during activities.!

Drug Unit:
Students will learn about advertising gimmicks used by companies to get people to use their products. They will also understand peer pressure and ways to say no confidently and assertively. In addition, they will learn about the dangers of using drugs of any kind.

Students will learn the difference between drugs that are medicines and drugs the are not! They will be able to identify medicines, and know the rules about taking medicine!
1. Only take medicine from a trusted adult in your family, a doctor, or someone that has permission from your

2. Always follow the directions from the doctor/directions on label.
3. Never take medicine from a friend!
4. Never take medicine if you are not sick/in need of the medicine.

Friends:Peer Pressure/3 D's/Always tell an adult you trust! After this lesson on peer pressure and 3 D's students will understand what peer pressure sounds like, and ways to stand up for themselves during peer pressure situations. Always tell an adult whenever something is Dangerous, Destructive or Disturbing...3 D's!

All students will understand what conflicts are, and ways to resolve conflicts (and still keep friends).

I can be a better listener, and will use the techniques learned in HEART class to be a better listener.
Today in HEART class we talked about being a good listener. We know that in order to be a good listener one needs to let the other person talk while making eye contact as much as possible. This week we are learning about feeling. There are many kinds of feelings and everyone has them. They can also change many times throughout the day. Knowing how people feel will help you understand why they act the way they do. You should also treat people differently based on their feelings. If someone is sad you may want to treat them with care and compassion. If they are scared you may want to assure them that they will be ok.
