In H.E.A.R.T. class your child will learn about many health related topics including: drugs safety (peer pressure, staying safe and knowing the facts), building positive friendships, human body (dissection with grades 2, 5 and 6), nutrition, physical fitness, safety (seatbelt, fire, internet, bicycle, sun, water, etc), bullying, showing appreciation, and maturation for 5th and 6th boys and girls. Fire Safety in Your Home:
We discussed fire safety in your home, and saw a fire safety movie from Timon and Pumbaa. Click on the LIVE picture to watch the movie.
We discussed:
Having a plan
Not playing with lighters and matches
Calling 911
Getting out of the home first and calling 911 from outside.
Having a meeting place
Emergency Preparedness
We will discuss typical family emergencies and the supplies needed to help with these emergencies. The students will understand how to make their own emergency preparedness kit (flashlight, batteries, whistle, etc). We will discuss practicing our emergency plans. Fire escape plans, tornado/severe weather plan/loss of power/etc.

If still learning to swim stay close to an adult.
Always swim with a buddy and an adult watching.
Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours!

The Human Body/Hygiene
The students will understand why it is so very important to take good care of their bodies. From keeping it clean to understanding how the human body works, students will learn that taking care of their body now will make for a healthier future.

Washing Hands the Right Way
Students will be able to understand and practice (at home) proper hand washing techniques. They will also understand that proper hand washing is the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs.

The Dangers of Alcohol
Students will understand why alcohol is not good for their growing bodies. They will also learn what a depressant is, and what it does to one's body. In addition students will know that you must be 21 years old to purchase/consume/possess alcohol.

Medicines are drug!
Students will learn the difference between drugs that are medicines and drugs the are not! They will be able to identify medicines, and know the rules about taking medicine!
1. Only take medicine from a trusted adult in your family, a doctor, or someone that has permission from your
parents..
2. Always follow the directions from the doctor/directions on label.
3. Never take medicine from a friend!
4. Never take medicine if you are not sick/in need of the medicine.

Smoking Stinks!
Students will understand the dangers of smoking. We will also discuss the issues when a friend wants to smoke, and how to handle this situation.
Go to SeeSaw for an assignment in HEART class. It is titled: Being a Real Friend It is due next week.
Students will learn facts about secondhand smoke and e-cigarettes aerosol and how to refuse/avoid it, and be confident standing up to possible peer pressure.

Conflict Resolution/Listening
I can be a better listener! I will use the techniques learned in HEART class to be a better listener, and will put these techniques to use when resolving a conflict.
Today in HEART class we talked about being a good listener. We know that in order to be a good listener one needs to let the other person talk while making eye contact as much as possible. If possible, comment on what the speaker just said to let them know that you heard them and care about what they are saying.

Today we talked about resolving conflicts with friends. See below for How To Talk it Out. We discussed different conflicts and the best way to talk it out and still keep your friends. When using an I message try to tell the other person how you feel. Example: I feel sad and left out when I am excluded from soccer at recess time.
