We will discuss typical family emergencies and the supplies needed to help with these emergencies. The students will understand how to make their own emergency preparedness kit (flashlight, batteries, whistle, etc). We will discuss practicing our emergency plans. Fire escape plans, tornado/severe weather plan/loss of power/etc.

We discussed fire safety in your home, and saw a fire safety movie from Timon and Pumbaa. Click on the LIVE picture to watch the movie.

Water Safety:
Always swim with an adult watching you!
Look before you leap! Feet First!
If still learning to swim stay close to an adult.
Always swim with a buddy and an adult watching.
Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours!
Wear a life jacket when on a boat, jet ski, etc.
Get out of water if there is lightning and thunder!

Don't ride on the back or handlebars of someone else's bike! One person on a bike!
Look left, right then left again!
Listen for cars and other vehicles!
Ride in a straight line, single file if one the sidewalk!
Leave space between riders!
Wear your helmet!
Obey STOP signs and traffic lights!
Sun Safety:
Wear sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours. Wear your hat, sun glasses, spend time in the shade on a sunny day, and wear clothes to help protect your skin from the sun.
Gun Safety:
Do not touch guns!
If a friend wants to show you a gun leave right away and tell an adult!

The Human Body/Hygiene
The students will understand why it is so very important to take good care of their bodies. From keeping it clean to understanding how the human body works, students will learn that taking care of their body now will make for a healthier future.
*Washing Hands the Right Way/Germ Busters
Students will be able to understand and practice (at home) proper hand- washing techniques. They will also understand that proper hand washing is the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs.

Drug Unit
Students will learn about advertising gimmicks used by companies to get people to use their products. They will also understand peer pressure and ways to say no confidently and assertively. In addition, they will learn about the dangers of using drugs of any kind.

Nutrition
Student will review the 5 food groups and how each group helps the body. They will view a movie (Breakfast Because) to help explain the importance of eating a healthy breakfast. They will also understand good fats vs bad fats and the sugar added to some of our drinks.
Students will continue with nutrition, specifically the amount of each food group
should be consumed each day (fruits and vegetables).

Smoking Stinks!
Students will understand the dangers of smoking. We will also discuss the issues when a friend wants to smoke, and how to handle this situation.
Go to SeeSaw for an assignment in HEART class. It is titled: Being a Real Friend It is due next week.
We will begin watching The Totally Disgusting Tobacco Gross Out Movie. We will watch half this week and half next week. It is really disgusting, so at any point if you (your child) doesn't want to watch it please just close out of the movie/meeting. Don't forget to go to SeeSaw for an assignment in HEART class. :)
Students will learn facts about secondhand smoke and e-cigarettes aerosol and how to refuse/avoid it, and be confident standing up to possible peer pressure.

Friends: Conflict Resolution/Listening
I can be a better listener! I will use the techniques learned in HEART class to be a better listener, and will put these techniques to use when resolving a conflict.
Today in HEART class we talked about being a good listener. We know that in order to be a good listener one needs to let the other person talk while making eye contact as much as possible. If possible, comment on what the speaker just said to let them know that you heard them and care about what they are saying.

All students will understand what conflicts are, and ways to resolve conflicts (and still keep friends).
Today we talked about resolving conflicts with friends. See below for the Wheel of Choices. We discussed different conflicts and the best way to talk it out and still keep your friends. When using an I message try to tell the other person how you feel. Example: I feel sad and left out when I am excluded from soccer at recess time.
